2018 NFL Power Rankings: Wild Card edition
1. New England Patriots
13-3 (AFC East champions)
No. 1 Seed in AFC
Once again, you can find the league’s active dynasty with at least a share of the best record in the NFL. This past season, the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings all own a 13-3 ledger. Bill Belichick’s club is making its ninth consecutive playoff appearance, tying a league record. And after a 2-2 start this season, the Pats have won three straight and 11 of their last 12 contests.
Yet, while this club is atop of our playoff Power Rankings, there’s a sense that this isn’t really the same version of a team that has been to seven Super Bowls since 2001. The question marks not only come on defense but with the recent play of the quarterback. Tom Brady has looked mortal at times the last month or so. He’s thrown six touchdown passes compared to five interceptions and been sacked 11 times over his last five games. That being said, he’ll be coming off a little rest and figures to be his usual dominating self in the playoffs.

As for that defense, don’t be fooled by the final numbers. After surrendering 14 offensive touchdowns and a whopping 128 points during the team’s 2-2 start, the Patriots have given up just 168 points (14.0 average) and 16 allowed 16 offensive TDs in their last 12 outings.
There’s not much not to like here. But these Patriots are also certainly not a sure thing when it comes to reaching Minneapolis on February 4.
