3 reasons the Rams definitely return to the playoffs in 2019
3. Growth of Jared Goff and Sean McVay
One of the biggest reasons for the sharp turnaround for the Rams came from two people: quarterback Jared Goff and a borderline prodigy at head coach, Sean McVay. Neither man had their best performance on Saturday night during the loss. For his part, Goff was a little too scattershot in the early going. This put the Rams behind on the scoreboard, a place they weren’t accustomed to this season. McVay made some curious coaching decisions and his offense flat didn’t play well enough to beat anyone.
Goff grew by leaps and bounds this year and unless he turns into Peyton Manning, he can’t take another massive step forward. That also doesn’t mean that he can’t continue to learn and improve. He’s still a super young player with under 30 career games. There’s no reason to think that he can’t make a few better throws and decisions next season. Goff had a four to one touchdown to interception ratio and will continue to be trusted with more as he gains experience. It wasn’t that long ago many thought he was a total bust. There is still plenty left for Goff to learn.
For McVay, being a head coach isn’t ever easy. McVay may have made it look like it this year, but he had his own growing pains. He will learn from this year and his first playoff game and be a better coach next season. Now that the majority of the offense has a year with McVay and will be back next season, players will be more comfortable in the system. McVay will also know which buttons to push and just how to maximize his talent the longer they play together.
