Johnny Manziel has confirmed he will be playing football this year. But where will he be doing it?

Whether you love him or hate him, former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel draws headlines wherever he goes. Teams have been curious about him since he has reportedly gotten his life under control. Currently, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL hold his rights.

Manziel is interested in playing for them. But he has set a Jan. 31 deadline for negotiations. After that point, Manziel would be free to negotiate with whoever he wants. Multiple CFL teams were interested in obtaining his rights, so even the Ti-Cats don’t sign him, he’ll likely have other suitors.

What we do know at this point is he’s definitely going to be playing football somewhere in 2018.

The question with Manziel has never been his physical abilities. He proved beyond a shadow of a doubt at Texas A&M that he can be a dynamic playmaker as a quarterback. Manziel’s dual-threat abilities make him hard for any defense to account for. Just ask Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

However, it’s fair to question if Manziel has done too much damage at this point. He hasn’t played in a professional league since 2015. And even when Manziel did play for the Browns, he was largely unimpressive.

That said, he would make sense for a CFL team. The CFL has been battling relevancy for a while. Getting a star like Manziel could be a great thing for the league. It would be an undeniably risky move to sign such a polarizing player. However, the potential reward makes the risk very worthwhile.

Manziel’s salary will likely be around $500,000 a year. That’s the standard for CFL quarterbacks. This could be a great opportunity for Johnny Football to finally become the star everyone thought he could be at Texas A&M. Or Manziel could fall flat on his face once again. Regardless of what happens, it should be entertaining.
