Each NFL team’s Olympic candidate
By Joe Schiller
Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton, Biathlon
The leader, the dab master himself and face of the Carolina Panthers is the team’s Olympic candidate. Luke Kuechly was a close second but it’s almost impossible not to go with Newton if you’re looking at the team roster. In terms of Olympic candidates, he would make the best one, there’s no question about it.
Newton may be built like an NFL linebacker but he plays quarterback and is pretty damn good at it. At 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, Newton is the most athletic and most dangerous dual-threat quarterback in the NFL.
You can put Russell Wilson in the same conversation but Newton still beats him out. Newton is the first quarterback on this list and has the size, speed and most importantly the power. He’s not afraid to take contact and loves going up against opposing defenders. You don’t expect Newton to be as agile as he is but with just one cut he’s going the other way. It’s the reason why he was the No. 1 overall pick and so heralded coming out of Auburn in 2011. He’s a special talent for a reason.
In the Winter Olympics, Newton would compete in the Biathlon, no doubt. His athleticism combined with his accuracy would work perfectly in the event. I think we’d find Newton on the podium if you gave him a chance to compete.
