29. Iowa vs. Iowa State

  • Date: Sep. 9
  • Outcome: Iowa wins 44-41

Few knew what would become of head coach Matt Campbell and the Iowa State Cyclones in 2017. But, head coach Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes had some sizable expectations to kick off the 2017 campaign. Iowa entered this particular contest as the favorite.

In terms of raw excitement, this game ranks with the very best of all that happened this year. But, the overall effect that it had on the bigger picture was limited. Both the Hawkeyes and Cyclones won their respective bowl games and had good years in their own rights.

In this one, Iowa State quarterback Jacob Park led a powerful attack from the Clones, that ultimately ended in disappointing fashion at home at Jack Trice Stadium. This was also a coming out party for Iowa State wide receiver Hakeem Butler, who had a 74 yard touchdown reception that looked to win the game.

Iowa running back Akrum Wadley then racked up a huge touchdown late in the game, that allowed the Hawkeyes to take the contest in overtime. For a Big 10 fan, this was a weirdly high-scoring game for the Hawkeyes. But, it was business as usual for the Clones in the Big 12.
