6. Brewers trade for Christian Yelich

The one team in the National League that has not received enough attention this offseason is the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brew Crew stormed back to contend for the entire year and gave the Chicago Cubs fits in the first half. This is a very good young team set up to win for years to come.

With a very deep farm system that includes seven members of MLB’s top-100 prospects list, the Brewers are positioned extremely well to make the winning bid to land center fielder Christian Yelich from the Miami Marlins. It will be another PR nightmare for Derek Jeter in South Beach if he does not get a deal done with his biggest trade chip before the season. Yelich does not want to be a part of the rebuild in Miami, and will become a distraction, even if he keeps his mouth shut due to constant rumors swirling.

Yelich is a great fit for the Brewers in that he is still young, cheap and has a good personality that would mesh well with the rest of the up-and-coming core in Milwaukee. Top prospect Lewis Brinson and last season’s primary center fielder Keon Broxton are both oozing potential but still need time to mature. Both could be used to headline a package going back to the Marlins with Brinson obviously being the more attractive name. Right fielder Domingo Santana could also be dangled if the Brewers get serious about pursuing Yelich.

Opportunities as good as this one rarely present themselves for small-market teams like the Brewers. They have built up one of the best farm systems in the game, and the time has now come to start dipping into that depth to push the MLB roster over the top.
