4. Los Angeles Dodgers

Paying up big bucks to free agents has been a non-starter for the Dodgers since Andrew Friedman took over in the front office. That has been frustrating to many Los Angeles baseball fans, but Friedman was handed an absolute mess by the previous regime and was placed in luxury-tax hell. The Dodgers are getting that situation under control while building one of the deepest farm systems in baseball, but their long World Series drought continues, and fans are getting more impatient by the year.

Saying that Friedman has accomplished nothing since taking over the Dodgers is highly unfair. He has been able to continue a string of NL West titles and got the team within a game of the title last year after they chased the single-season wins record for most of the year. This is a dominant and complete roster with or without Yu Darvish.

In a rotation that is topped by the greatest pitcher of the modern era in Clayton Kershaw, Darvish is an absolute luxury for the Dodgers. This is a similar position for the front office as when Zack Greinke hit free agency two years ago. While Greinke did receive an offer from the Dodgers, it was not an aggressive one, and he signed with Arizona.

Darvish will only end up with the Dodgers if he does not receive any strong offers from his other suitors. He is not going to find a seven-year deal in Los Angeles, and his situation is not comparable to Rich Hill’s last season. For three years, the Dodgers would love to have Darvish back, but he wants — and quite frankly, deserves — more than that.
