Will Ferrell uncovered how Roger Federer seems so timeless in his ability to keep winning: he’s a vampire.

Will Ferrell crashed Roger Federer’s on-court interview—apparently in cahoots with John McEnroe, who he referred to as John McIntosh—and it provided some fun comic relief during Federer’s first match win at this year’s AO, defeating No. 49 Aljaz Bedene with customary confidence, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

It was fun to watch Federer ease into his interview with McEnroe for the umpteenth time, after another victory, when McEnroe called out “a guest who wanted to ask a few questions,” Ferrell in Ron Burgundy mode. Federer, to his credit, seemed surprised but was, of course, quick on his feet.

Ferrell asked the 19-time grand slam champ, “Would you describe your game as a silky gazelle?”

Federer took a moment to answer, “Maybe. Maybe not… A gazelle, don’t they get eaten in the end?”

The hilarity continued, as Ferrell asked the all-important question many of us have been wondering.

“You seem ageless. (pause) Are you a witch or a vampire?”

Federer was laughing so McEnroe—or McIntosh as Ferrell called him—chimed in, “Which one’s better?”

To which Ferrell answered his own question (while Fed was laughing), “Probably a vampire.”

I knew it!

Ferrell then came up with his own theory about Fed’s fitness routine.

“Your secret to fitness is that you only eat wombat meat. Is that true?”

To which the reigning AO champ answered with the best straight face he could muster, “It is untrue.”

The funny anchorman asked his final question, “Does it get annoying when they just scream, C’mon Roger [in full obnoxious screaming fan mode]! C’mon Roger!!”

But the five-time AO champ had the best answer. “They remind me of my name… At an older age, you start forgetting your own name sometimes. It’s great,” said the 36 year-old.

Did he know McEnroe and Ferrell had planned this coup?

“[It was] a surprise. I didn’t know that was going to happen,” he said later. “That was fun. I haven’t met him a lot, to be honest. Actually I saw him when I started the match, then I totally forgot he sat there. At the end, I realized he is still actually there. That’s when he walked out onto center court.”

Next up for the Swiss player is Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.

Let’s hope Will Ferrell—I mean, Ron Burgundy—plans to crash more interviews.
