MLB Trade Rumors: Top 10 remaining offseason trade candidates
8. Starlin Castro
It’s honestly quite surprising that Starlin Castro is still on the Miami roster. His inclusion in the Giancarlo Stanton trade just screamed of a move made to keep the bean counters in both front offices reasonably happy. There isn’t much reason for Castro to suit up for the Marlins, and he doesn’t appear overly excited about the possibility.
Getting traded by the Yankees had to feel like the rug was being pulled out from beneath his feet for the four-time All-Star who made a very successful transition to second base in the Big Apple. Castro had fallen out of favor with the Chicago Cubs as Addison Russell and Javy Baez ascended to the big leagues, but he fit in well in New York and shed any lingering concerns about his attitude on the field.
Castro hit an even .300 with 16 home runs and 63 RBI in only 112 games last year. He did set a new career-high with a .792 OPS, but that was aided by hitting into the Yankee Stadium jet stream. It’s hard to believe Castro has already been in the league eight years and is still only entering his age-28 season. He is no longer viewed as a potential franchise savior, but offers plenty to any team looking to acquire him.
The Marlins will owe Castro just under $23 million for the next two years, and there’s no reason to believe they intend to pay much of that sum. The second baseman has no interest in playing for the Marlins, which seems reasonable after he got to experience winning the past three seasons.
