3. Ottawa Senators – Adam Boqvist (D) Sweden

A Swedish defenseman who loves to have the puck on his stick and make plays should sound familiar to Sens fans. As of right now the future of Erik Karlsson in Ottawa is shaky. There are rumors the Senators are listening to trade offers about the star defenseman. Boqvist is not an automatic replacement for Karlsson but his style will be similar and that is a good thing.

Boqvist did not play in the World Junior tournament this year but he likely will be an impact player for Sweden next year. He has put together a nice season so far splitting time between his junior team and Brynas IF of the SHL. Boqvist will likely stay in Sweden next season after being drafted and then make the transition to North America. This is not an uncommon route for players out of Europe to take and is often beneficial to the players development.

Team Fit

As an organization Ottawa doesn’t have great depth at defense. Boqvist isn’t going to be a day one starter but would be a great add to the pipeline. Worst case scenario is Ottawa loses Karlsson and they have Boqvist in the pipeline to replace him. Best case scenario is Karlsson stays and then you have a Karlsson lite developing for the future.
