Buffalo Bills free agency 2018: Top 5 targets
By John Buhler
Nobody on the Bills love the Bills more than five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kyle Williams. It would be a shame to see him leave in free agency after 12 fantastic seasons with the organization. While he has been a great Bill for years, Williams will be 35 years old in 2018. Is it time to move off from a franchise great?
Williams is coming off a three-year, $22.3 million deal he signed with the organization in 2015. Though he only played in six games in 2015, Williams would make his fifth trip to the Pro Bowl in 2016. He did play in all 16 games in 2017, including the loss in the AFC Wild Card round to Jacksonville.
Yes, Buffalo should have the money to bring back a pillar in the locker room in Williams, but we’re not likely looking at another three-year extension. A one-year deal could be drawn up in an instant, maybe even a two-year deal wouldn’t be that hard for both sides to agree on. The question is if McDermott and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier are looking to get younger in the trenches or not?
Youth is not on Williams’ side, but the locker room and on-field productivity totally are. Then again, Buffalo can’t be beholden to who used to dominate for them in years past. It’s better to move off a guy a year early than a year too late. Williams could be back, but it should not be on a massive extension.
