2018 NBA Mock Draft: Collin Sexton could break open the New York Knicks’ ceiling
Before this season, it was easy to pinpoint what New Orleans needed. They were so badly afflicted by injuries and inconsistency that simply playing solid two-way guys who could grow next to Anthony Davis became an easy go-to solution. However, with their offense performing so well this year, it becomes harder to say what their needs are. That being said, Diallo fills a few holes.
The point guard position has been a problem for the Pelicans all year, beginning with rookie Frank Jackson’s injury in the preseason. Jameer Nelson backs up Rajon Rondo, leaving the team with perhaps the oldest point guard rotation in the league. A simple fix for next season might be to just play Jrue Holiday more at that position next to other combo guards. They already have a few, from Ian Clark to E’Twuan Moore. Diallo would be another good option.
I still believe Diallo’s biggest problem has been shot selection. Until the recent success of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jarred Vanderbilt, he was Kentucky’s only consistent creator off the dribble. It led to many contested shots and jumpers from inefficient spots on the court.
If he were in a different role, like the one Buddy Hield played in New Orleans last year, Diallo could be quite successful.
