Texas Football Recruiting 2018: 5 most important commits for Longhorns
2. Caden Sterns/DeMarvion Overshown, Safety
In addition to the losses of Elliott and Hill, Jason Hall and Antwuan Davis are also out of eligibility. Elliott saw the majority of snaps on the back end of the defense and ranked second on the team with 63 total tackles last season. Davis was credited with 32 total tackles, and Hall recorded 22 total stops, which ranked No. 11 and No. 16, respectively on the unit. Davis also picked off two passes (returning one for a touchdown) and had a sack. Hall forced one interception and also recorded a sack.
All three players were very productive in 2017, which means there will be an opportunity for newcomers to make an immediate impact at safety. Fortunately for Texas, two five-star safeties are on their way to Austin, with a four-star recruit also in the mix.
Caden Sterns comes in as an early enrollee, ranked No. 28 overall in the 247Sports Composite and No. 3 among high school safeties. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Sibolo native has a good frame for the position, and won’t need much time in the weight room to be college ready. A former LSU commit, Sterns has a great blend of ball skills and physicality that should help him move quickly up the depth chart.
Before we get to B.J. Foster, who is the top overall prospect in the 2018 Texas recruiting class, a quick word about DeMarvion Overshown, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound safety who played in the Under Armour All-American Game, is the No. 7 safety in the 247Sports Composite, but comes in No. 2 at the position in the ESPN recruiting rankings. ESPN actually ranks Foster, Overshown and Sterns Nos. 1-3 among high school safety prospects. Incredible.
