2018 NFL mock draft: Baker Mayfield heads to Jets
By Brad Weiss
The Detroit Lions were one of those teams who flirted with the playoffs all season long, but eventually found themselves on the outside looking in. Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford was made the highest-paid player in the league last offseason, and he certainly played up to his contract. The offense was stellar at times, and he once again threw for more than 4,00 yards in a season.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Lions need some help heading into next season. They made a nice pick with Florida linebacker Jarrad Davis, but he needs some help if they are going to overtake the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers in the NFC North. Bringing in an effective edge rusher to add to a decent defensive line should be a priority, and they could find one in Marcus Davenport.
Davenport played his college ball for UTSA, so he did not get much publicity prior to the end of the season. However, he is all over everybody’s draft board now, as he has an NFL-ready skill set that is going to make him a dangerous player at the next level. these Lions are so close to being a perennial playoff team, and a couple extra pieces this offseason could really put them over the top.
