2018 NFL mock draft: Baker Mayfield heads to Jets
By Brad Weiss
Heading into the 2017 NFL season, nobody really expected the New York Jets to do much. The team spent most of the previous offseason getting rid of their veteran talent, clearing room for young players to step up for the first time in their NFL careers. Instead of being the worst team in the NFL, the Jets actually played above their talent level, and in the process, likely saved head coach Todd Bowles job.
As the team looks to improve their roster heading into next season, it is clear they need a long-term solution at the quarterback position. While he may not have the size you look for in an NFL quarterback, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield really turned heads during the Senior Bowl this past weekend. He is a player you can build a franchise around, and those making comparisons to Johnny Manziel are just lazy.
Josh McCown had a breakout season for the Jets in 2017, though with his advanced age, he is not the solution at the position. The Jets could bring him back in some role for next season, whether it is to start the season as the starter, or be a veteran mentor for whichever quarterback they draft in the first round. Mayfield is going to be a star at the NFL level, and he showed the scouts this past weekend that he has the zip on the ball you need to be a legitimate starter in the league.
