Top 20 quarterback performances in Super Bowl history
By Joe Romano
11. Joe Montana, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XIX
The first repeat performer on the list is San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana. This time Montana gets in for his performance against the Miami Dolphins in 1985.
This game featured two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Montana and the Dolphins’ Dan Marino. Not to disappoint, both threw for over 300 yards, the first time in Super Bowl history that was done.
These two teams were the NFL’s best during the regular season. Marino led the Dolphins to a 14-2 record while the Montana led 49ers went 15-1.
It was Montana who stole the show in the Super Bowl over Marino. The latter finished with 318 yards on 21-of-50 with one touchdown and two interceptions. Meanwhile Montana completed 24-of-35 passes for 331 yards and a touchdown. He also set a quarterback rushing record in the game with 59 yards and a touchdown.
The 49ers would dominate as soon as the clock turned over into the second quarter. The final score of 38-16 was one of the more lopsided victories in Super Bowl history. Montana took the MVP home after his impressive four touchdown performance.
