2. Joe Montana, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XXIV

Back to back San Francisco 49ers. First the backup, now the master.

Only two quarterbacks made this list more than once, Tom Brady and Joe Montana. The latter actually made the cut three times. There is something to be said about the best players playing their best in the biggest moments. Montana certainly did that.

His best statistical performance came in Super Bowl XXIV. Montana and the 49ers completely crushed the John Elway led Broncos 55-10. It was the second time that Elway and company got blown out in a Super Bowl.

San Francisco’s 55 points is the most scored by any team in the Super Bowl. This game is the most one-sided Super Bowl in NFL history according to margin of victory.

Montana took home MVP honors for the third time in four Super Bowl wins. He completed 22-of-29 passes for 297 yards and a Super Bowl record five touchdown passes. Montana joined fellow players on this list Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw in winning both regular season and Super Bowl MVP.

It was the team’s second straight Super Bowl but it’s first without legendary coach Bill Walsh. Fellow Hall of Fame player Jerry Rice caught three of Montana’s touchdowns but unlike the game two years ago it was not enough to steal his MVP.
