Super Bowl power rankings: Who’s the best loser?
By John Buhler
3. 1990 Buffalo Bills, Super Bowl XXV
The 1990 Buffalo Bills made their first ever trip to the Super Bowl in franchise history. The Bills would go 13-3 and win the AFC East. They put up a ton of points in the AFC Playoffs, scoring 44 points on the rival Miami Dolphins in the Divisional round and blowing out the Los Angeles Raiders, 51-3, in the 1990 AFC Championship.
Though Buffalo had never played in a Super Bowl before, the Bills were a seven-point favorite over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXV in Tampa Stadium. Fate would have it that the Bills would have a chance to win a Super Bowl as time expired with a field goal. Unfortunately, kicker Scott Norwood would miss the potential game-winning field goal, as it went “Wide Right.”
The Giants would go on to win their second Lombardi Trophy on that missed field goal by Norwood, 20-19. It would turn out to be the Bills’ best chance to win any of their four straight trips to the Super Bowl. They were slightly outmatched by the 1991 Washington Redskins and had absolutely no chance against the 1992-93 Dallas Cowboys.
The Bills go down as the greatest era of a team to have not won a Super Bowl. Nobody has ever made it to four straight Super Bowls except for them. One could only think what would have become of this potential dynasty had Norwood’s kick been a few feet to the left.
