SNL took the opportunity to troll both the Eagles and Patriots, using American history to make it all possible.

When SNL has a show the night before the Super Bowl, there’s always a golden opportunity to use the game to its advantage. Never before have we seen it done as well as this weekend; it’s a frontrunner for the best skit of this season.

Rather than go low with a skit making fun of modern-day fans, SNL blended in some American history in order to troll both the Patriots and Eagles. The skit revolved around the Revolutionary War, and how the Patriots of New England are unstoppable in battle. That’s something those from Philadephia took exception to.

Both Rachel Dratch and Tina Fey cameoed in the skit, but the fact that such a thing wasn’t the headline here is a testament to just how well written the sketch was. This was extremely smart comedy — the kind that we don’t see enough of these days, even from SNL. There’s no doubting that Saturday Night Live is on the cutting edge of satire, but this was a throwback to the counterculture days that harkened to skits like the classic ‘Lord and Lady Douche’.

It’s one of the best skits that SNL has done all year long, and it was also one of the longest in length. Pushing the ten-minute mark, there was so much packed into this that it requires a few viewings to truly appreciate it’s genius.

This skit is what peak SNL looks like and is what the writing staff can do when it embraces just how talented the people in the room are.
