5 teams that should trade for Nick Foles
4. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars are, as long as they want to be, on the hook to pay Blake Bortles $19 million next season under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. They can completely avoid that by releasing him early in the new league year, but surgery on his right wrist after the AFC Championship Game complicates matters. If Bortles can’t pass a physical, less than two months after that surgery, Jacksonville would be stuck with him next season.
Bortles was not the problem during the postseason, and during the 2017 season as whole, but the Jaguars are thought to be a better quarterback away from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Apart from financial considerations, handing Bortles the starting job heading into next season would not be a prudent move.
At minimum, Foles could serve as legitimate competition to take the starting job from Bortles during training camp. If Jacksonville cuts ties with Bortles and completely looks for a new starter, and they don’t want to make a run at someone like Kirk Cousins, then Foles becomes a solid option in that scenario too.
