Detroit Lions: Matt Patricia’s winning pedigree

If you can’t beat ’em, then do the next best thing and steal one of their top coaches. That’s exactly what the Detroit Lions did with Matt Patricia. He comes over from the Belichick coaching tree and gets his first crack at a head coaching gig. At just 43-years old, Patricia is considered one of the brightest young defensive minds in all of football. He’s worked his way up starting as an offensive assistant with the Patriots in 2004 to becoming the full-time defensive coordinator in 2012. Patricia brings winning pedigree which is exactly what the Lions need.

The Lions have come a long way away since their 0-16 season but they’ve yet to see much postseason success. They’ve reached the playoffs just three times since 2010 and haven’t gone past the Wild-Card round. With the talent this roster holds, it comes down to coaching and that’s exactly where Patricia wins. One of the most important parts of being successful in the NFL is establishing a winning culture. What better way to do that than bring in a coach who’s surrounded by it? That kind of attitude is infectious and you can bet Patricia is going to ingrain that in his players.

The NFC North is getting any easier in 2018. The Vikings are coming off a deep playoff run, Aaron Rodgers is healthy and the Bears are on the up and come up. The Lions have been on the brink of a playoff berth the last two seasons and have the talent to contend in the postseason. He’s not Bill Belichick but Patricia can bring the Lions similar success in his first season as a head coach.
