New Orleans Saints: Winning with a new formula

The Sean Payton-Drew Brees era has always been defined through the air. The Saints have always been one of the most exciting teams and were used to winning solely by outscoring their opponents. That completely changed this season thanks to Mickey Loomis and his scouts. They drafted Ryan Ramczyk, Marshon Lattimore, Alvin Kamara and completely changed the dynamic of the team.

From a passing oriented team, the pressure suddenly fell off of Drew Brees’ shoulders. He no longer had to throw for 400 yards a game. Mark Ingram and Kamara dominated on the ground and combined for close to 3,000 scrimmage yards. The defense vastly improved and finished as a top-15 unit, which was more than enough to compliment a high-scoring offense. What seemed to be the end of an era gained new life with a young pulse. And if it weren’t for one duck by Marcus Williams, the Saints could have very well been Super Bowl bound.

Brees is a free agent but will most certainly be back this season. The young talent continues to get better and strong draft record bodes well for the Saints heading forward. They’ll have to find an eventual quarterback replacement but there’s still plenty to squeeze out before a new regime takes over.

The Saints should and will be favorites in the NFC South once again. They’re battled-tested and have playoff-caliber units on both sides of the ball. They’ve got unfinished business to take care of and a Super Bowl title is the perfect way to cure any heartbreak from a playoff hangover.
