The 2018 30-team NBA mega-trade that solves nothing and makes everyone mad
By Ian Levy
Oklahoma City Thunder
Sending out: Patrick Patterson (DEN), Alex Abrines (CLE), 2020 first-round pick (SAC)
Bringing in: Avery Bradley (LAC), Stanley Johnson (DET)
The Oklahoma City Thunder went all in this summer when the traded for both Carmelo Anthony and Paul George. This team is built around Russell Westbrook, but also their versatile wings and the ability to matchup in a hypothetical playoff series with the Golden State Warriors. That matchup ability took a hit when Andre Roberson was lost for the season with an injury but this deal helps the Thunder recoup some of the defensive value.
Bradley has a down year for the Pistons and his propensity for long 2-pointers resurfaced to a troubling degree. But he was great as a limited spot-up threat for the Celtics, focusing instead on applying his tenacious defensive abilities. Bradley is more effective guarding point guard but he would be fantastic on Stephen Curry. Johnson is another stout defender who can slide up and defend bigger players as well.
The Thunder sacrifice some shooting in this deal, sending Abrines out. And giving up on Patrick Patterson and his horrible start would be tough. But if Oklahoma City feels like they have to make a move to keep up with the Warriors (as much as possible) this is probably as good as anything out there.
