Houston Texans free agency 2018: Top 5 targets
By Joe Romano
2. Trumaine Johnson, CB
Former team: Los Angeles Rams
To flip to the defensive side of the ball, the area of concern for the Houston Texans should be at the cornerback position. That is where former Los Angeles’ Rams Trumaine Johnson comes into play.
This is a good crop of potential free agent cornerbacks headlined by Johnson. After playing this past season on the Rams’ franchise tag, he is looking for a long term deal. A deal that the Rams will likely shell out. However, they have other priorities like getting potential Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald locked up long term. Johnson may need to look elsewhere to meet his monetary demands.
The former third round pick out of Montana has the protypical size and traits of the league’s best corners. Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 213 pounds, he can matchup with the game’s top receivers.
With aging Johnathan Joseph as the team’s top corner, Johnson would give them a major boost. Their defense ranked near the bottom of the league defending the pass. That unit will be bolstered with the return of their injured defensive front players but Johnson would also help.
Again, the Texans lack the draft capital to take advantage of what is shaping up to be a deep corner class. Spending money on Johnson and grabbing some help in Day 3 of the draft would be a good course of action. Former first-round pick in 2015 Kevin Johnson is looking like a miss and should not be relied on. It’s time for Houston to add some talent to the secondary to match the talent they have up front.
