For the second straight year, it looks like the Detroit Red Wings are going to miss the playoffs. The Red Wings have become just another mediocre NHL franchise. We’re living in a sad world, folks.

Mike Green is the only tradeable chip on the Red Wings roster. They aren’t going to give up on their young guys and no one wants their older players on bad contracts. In reality, they “need” to move Henrik Zetterberg the most. But no one is taking a 37-year-old with three years left on a contract that pays him $6 a season.

Green is in the last year of his deal and is still an effective offensive defenseman. There are a couple of potential playoff teams near the bottom of the league in power play percentage who could use a player like Green on their blueline. I’m looking at you, Columbus. Hey, why not make a Green for Jack Johnson one-for-one swap. That way, everyone wins.

The Capitals have been linked to Green due to their history and I would not rule out the Golden Knights making a play. Despite their success this season, their power play is in the bottom-10 and they can afford to take a chance on Green if the price isn’t too high.

Stay warm with this Red Wings hoodie from Fanatics.

The Red Wings likely aren’t in a huge rush to move Green. He likes it in Detroit and they could probably re-sign him in the offseason if they don’t trade him. They’d be wise to move him, but I could see a situation where he’s the hot name who doesn’t get moved.
