After Josh McDaniels spurned them, here are five candidates to be the next Indianapolis Colts head coach.

Dating back a few weeks, it looked like Josh McDaniels would be the next Indianapolis Colts head coach as soon as it could be announced officially. The team even went so far as to announce an agreement on Tuesday morning, before McDaniels decided to stay with the Patriots as offensive coordinator before a scheduled press conference on Wednesday.

Pro Football Talk reported the Colts quickly had a few candidates lined up to interview in the coming day or two, in case McDaniels indeed spurned them. Almost everyone they interviewed prior to settling on McDaniels has landed a head coaching job elsewhere or withdrawn their name to stay at a college job, but there are still some appealing candidates out there for the Colts to choose from at this late stage.

McDaniels clearly would not have been all-in as Indianapolis’ head coach, but they can absolutely find someone who will be. Here are five candidates to follow through and take the job as Colts coach.

5. Dave Toub, Chiefs Special Teams Coach

Toub immediately surfaced as a candidate to replace Chuck Pagano. His relationship with Colts general manager Chris Ballard dates back over a decade, when both were with the Chicago Bears, and most recently they were together in the Kansas City Chiefs organization.

Toub has interviewed for head coaching jobs with the Chargers and Broncos in the past. He’s an easy interview in Indianapolis now, and he’s surely one of the aforementioned candidates who is ready to interview right away.
