Is Donald Trump at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony?
By Amy Kaplan
Will he or won’t he? Everyone wants to know if President Donald Trump will attend the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in South Korea this year, bringing into question if President Donald Trump will be attending the games.
Rising tensions between North Korea (less than 50 miles from the site of the Winter Olympics) make the appearance of the sitting President unlikely, though it’s not out of the question.
According to the South Korean organizing committee, they have extended invitations to First Lady Melania Trump, as well as President Trump’s daughter, Ivanka.
“We want as many high-ranking officials as possible, as it would be very significant and very meaningful for us,” said Lee Hee-beom, the president and CEO of the Pyeongchang organizing committee (h/t USAToday).
The President is in charge of sending a delegation to the Olympics, though it’s not always the first family. In 2014 President Barack Obama sent tennis great Billie Jean King to represent the U.S. for the Sochi Games. That was the first time since 2000 that a current or former president, vice president or first lady was not named to the delegation.
“It’s a very tricky situation,” Trump told reporters after meeting with North Korean defectors (h/t CNN). “We’re going to find out how it goes. We think the Olympics will go very nicely and after that, who knows.”

President George W. Bush attended the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China but President Obama did not attend either the London, Russia or Rio Olympics.
President Trump has yet to announce his intentions on who he will send to the Olympics or if he will attend in person.
The 2018 Winter Olympics will run on NBC from Feb. 9 until Feb. 25.
