Olympics Women’s Normal Hill Individual Final medal results, highlights and more

Many of the outdoor events have dealt with high winds. Ski jumping was no different as the action continued with the women’s normal hill final.

A new Olympic champion was crowned in women’s ski jumping at Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre on Monday. Carina Vogt, the defending Olympic gold medalist on the normal hill, finished just fifth. It was a changing of the guard, as none of the podium finishers from Sochi in 2014 returned to the top three. Instead, FIS World Cup leader Maren Lundby snatched away the top spot of the podium.

Wind was a factor, as most jumps were readjusted to account for the assist by Mother Nature. As a result, there were plenty of jumps over 100 meters on the normal hill. The eye-popping numbers demonstrated that, when it comes to flying through the air on skis, there is little that physiologically separates men from women.

30 women took to the normal hill for the final in women’s ski jumping. But only a handful ever really had a chance of challenging Lundby for the title.

Lundby, who has dominated the 2017-2018 season, continued the streak of good form in Pyeongchang. With jumps of 105.5 meters and 110.0 meters, the Norwegian star finished a dozen points ahead of Germany’s Katharina Althaus.

In the end, the Olympic podium mirrored the current top three in the FIS World Cup standings. Lundby has dominated the circuit all season, winning seven of the first 11 stops on the tour before the Olympics. With Vogt in semi-retirement, Althaus has become the top German on the circuit. And Japan’s Sara Takanashi rounded out the podium with a pair of 103.5-meter jumps

In the end, Germans took four of the top 10 spots in the final round. Americans Sara Hendrickson and Abby Ringquist finished 19th and 29th respectively.
