3. Quarterback Depth

We have arrived at the big question we all thought the Dolphins already answered with Ryan Tannehill: Do the Dolphins need to reboot at quarterback? Tannehill was a top-10 pick for the Dolphins in the 2012 NFL Draft, but has never been a Pro Bowl level player. He missed all of last year with a torn ACL and missed the playoff run with Miami in 2016 due to another knee injury.

Though he is on the roster in 2018, the same may not be said for last year’s starter Jay Cutler or long-time backup Matt Moore. Both will be hitting free agency. Cutler may stick with the Dolphins for one more year due to familiarity with Adam Gase, but does anybody really want that to happen? Moore could stay on another deal, but his deal will be more pricey, as he is seen as a top-five backup in the league.

Miami has some work to do to better position itself for the present and future at quarterback. Perhaps drafting a guy at No. 11 could be in the mix? Wyoming’s Josh Allen or Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield could conceivably still be on the board at No. 11 in the 2018 NFL Draft if the Dolphins choose to go in that direction.

As for free agents outside of their own, Miami could look at any of the three free agent quarterbacks that were on the 2017 Minnesota Vikings in Sam Bradford, Teddy Bridgewater or Case Keenum. It doesn’t seem likely that Miami will enter the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes. If they want a backup that isn’t Moore, perhaps Drew Stanton, E.J. Manuel or Chad Henne could fill the void?
