Miami Dolphins: 5 offseason needs
By John Buhler
2. Top Wide Receiver
Okay, this could be a bit of a problem for the Miami Dolphins. Easily the biggest name that will be hitting free agency for them is No. 1 wide receiver Jarvis Landry. He is a three-time Pro Bowler in the AFC, as an absolute pass-catching phenom. However, the Dolphins still have DeVante Parker on his rookie deal and Kenny Stills under a new contract. What are the ‘Phins to do?
Well, they are going to have to pay more than $1 million annually to keep Landry in South Beach on a second contract. He stands to make a fortune as one of the preeminent free agents of this class. Landry and Allen Robinson of the Jacksonville Jaguars headline what should be an outstanding free agent class at the wide receiver position.
What the Dolphins have to figure out is if it is worthwhile to pay a premium to keep Landry or if they think Parker and Stills can make up for him in the aggregate. While Landry led the AFC in receptions last season, he did not eclipse 1,000 yards receiving in his fourth year in the league. Could that indicated he’s just being force-fed passes in a bad Dolphins’ aerial attack? Either way, he’s about to get paid and Miami has to accept that.
Miami could target Robinson in free agency at possibly a lower price than Landry, as Robinson is coming off a year where he only played in one game due to injury and coincidentally, the Jaguars did just fine without him. Sure, Miami could look at a receiver in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, but they have other needs besides overdrafting on Courtland Sutton out of SMU or Calvin Ridley out of Alabama.
