4. Jack Mewhort

Sacks given up – 56, worst in NFL

Rush yards per game – 103.8 yards, 22nd in NFL

Pro Football Focus grade – 46.1, Poor rating

Despite the fact that Mewhort will turn just 27 during the 2018 season, he will face some obstacles to get a new contract due to some knee issues that have come up these past two seasons. He has missed 17 games the past two years and teams will certainly have plenty of questions if Mewhort can get back to full health. If the knee checks out, the team that takes a chance on him could hit the jackpot.

Before Mewhort suffered the knee issues he was regarded as a very good offensive lineman. His 2017 numbers above are a perfect case of stats not always telling the full story. It’s not on Mewhort that the Colts gave up the amount of sacks they did. That line was a wreck and it didn’t help that quarterback Andrew Luck missed the entire season. Quarterback Jacoby Brisset played well but there is an obvious drop off between the two players. Indy actually had a decent running game in context of struggling in other areas on the offense.

In addition, the PFF rating is skewed a bit by the partial season and the fact Mewhort was playing through a knee injury. Playing in the trenches in the NFL is unforgiving and it’s even harder if someone doesn’t have a functioning knee.  Mewhort is a strong candidate for a bounce back 2018 with a clean bill of health and some better line mates around him.
