2018 NFL mock draft: Saquon Barkley heads to Giants
By Brad Weiss
The San Francisco 49ers will have to flip a coin with the Oakland Raiders to see who picks in the No. 9 spot in the first round, but for arguments sake, we will give them the win. During the 2017 NFL season, the team traded for New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, in a trade deadline deal that could turn around the franchise. The team has already locked up Jimmy G to the most expensive contract in NFL history, so the ball is now in his court to deliver a championship.
In order for the 49ers to get there, they have a lot of work to do on this roster. Still, Garoppolo won every start he made last season, and in his NFL career, he is a perfect 7-0. Heading into 2018, the 49ers need to add more weapons around him, although they did get a career-year from Marquis Goodwin in 2017. Garoppolo is a special quarterback, but even a player of his caliber cannot do it on his own.
When it comes to the wide receiver position, the 49ers need depth, and they could find it in the first round in April. Courtland Sutton played his college ball at SMU, and while that is considered a small football program, he has big-time talent. He has the ability to really take the lid off the defense, and 49ers fans are clamoring for their next big wide receiving star to dominate the NFL in the Bay Area.
