2018 NFL Draft: Cleveland Browns 7-round mock
By Joe Romano
Round 2 – Pick 33
Ronald Jones II, RB, USC
After missing out on Saquon Barkley with the fourth pick, the Browns find value in USC’s Ronald Jones. This is a deep running back draft so it may be for the best that the team waited to find one in the second round and was able to add a player like Fitzpatrick.
On the field it is easy to see the Jamaal Charles comparisons that many have placed on Jones. The sure-handed speedster is a dynamic playmaker that could change the Browns offense.
At 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds his frame suggests that he is a more outside runner reliant on his outstanding speed. Once the tape gets going those notions are dismissed. Jones runs behind his pads and gets north and south in a hurry. His jump cut might be the best in this class as well.
Cleveland needs to bring in talented players at almost every position. Jones in the second round gives them an every down back and a touchdown machine, evident by his 19 a season ago at USC.
Round 2 – Pick 35
Isaiah Oliver, CB, Colorado
One way to solve the conundrum in drafting Minkah Fitzpatrick is to grab an outside corner who can aid Fitzpatrick’s transition between safety and nickel corner. Isaiah Oliver out of Colorado is everything a team wants in an outside corner.
There is a chance that Oliver is taken off the board in the first round and even the top true corner in the draft. At 6-foot-1 and 195 he has the ideal length and height to be a team’s top corner.
During his time at Colorado last year he was rarely tested. The 2016 tape is a better representation of what this guy can do on the field. He still was able to knock down over 10 passes this season and grab two interceptions.
He would improve any secondary but the Browns especially who relied heavily on Devin McCourty last season Pairing Oliver and Fitzpatrick with McCourty and Jabrill Peppers gives this team a strength at an increasingly important area of the field.
Round 2 – Pick 64
James Washington, WR, Oklahoma State
Cleveland closes the second round of the draft by grabbing another player who may be a first round talent but slipped in this mock. Oklahoma State’s James Washington is in the debate to be the second receiver taken. This iteration of a mock draft has him slipping to the end of the second round.
With Washington the Browns are getting a partner to go with Josh Gordon. Washington proved at the Senior Bowl that he is more than the deep threat he showed at Oklahoma State. He was able to show strong route running and even stronger hands. Everything that is thrown his way he catches.
A strong combine could push him into the end of the first round conversation. The production is outstanding at Oklahoma State. He may be the biggest winner from his strong Senior Bowl performance.
