2018 NBA Mock Draft: Trae Young could reset the Kings backcourt
There was a great story published this week by The Athletic’s Brian Bennett depicting Chandler Hutchison’s development from no-name non-shooter on a mid major to Boise State’s star and a first round prospect.
Bennett got great stories out of Hutchison and his coaches about the incredible training routines the senior went through over the past two summers, working with Damian Lillard at his university. Lillard comes to the school for 10 days each summer to work with his former Weber State coach and current player development trainer Phil Beckner. Hutchison has begun to use Lillard as a mentor and sounding board as he makes his way through the draft process for the second consecutive season.
With Beckner and Lillard, Hutchison has not only increased his usage and turned into a true offensive weapon, he has developed what the group likes to call “aggressive usage.” To be sure, Hutchison uses a full third of the Broncos’ possessions when he is on the floor, by far the highest on the team and of the senior wing’s career.
He has turned himself into a mid-major star and a potential first-round steal. Predicting the continued development of players who rise out of nowhere to become prospects is difficult, but considering the success Utah has had with guys like Gordon Hayward and Rodney Hood, there’s a good chance the pairing works well.
