Ashley Wagner is at the Winter Olympics as an alternate and to cheer on her fellow Team USA skaters including training partner Adam Rippon.

Ashley Wagner was in the audience tonight in Pyeongchang cheering on her training partner and good friend Adam Rippon. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Wagner revealed she’d been selected as the alternate via text message for this Winter Olympics.

The figure skating icon has been training back at her home rink in Long Beach, California with coach Rafael Arutunian ever since… Just in case. The last time a Figure Skating alternate was called upon by Team USA was back at the Turin 2006 games. Emily Hughes had skated for Michelle Kwan who was forced to withdraw due to a hip injury.

According to NBC Olympics, Wagner flew to Pyeongchang on Feb. 6 and trained meticulously until the first official Team USA practice. The chances of competing now look slim and Wagner would never wish anyone having to withdraw. She knows how much the opportunity means to any athlete. Wagner is enjoying the spectacle of the Winter Olympics and was even spotted in the audience happily cheering friend Adam Rippon today.

Wagner previously competed at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games and won a team Bronze Medal. She was the 2012 Four Continents Figure Skating Champion, winning a Gold medal. Wagner is also a three-time U.S. National Figure Skating Champion, winning in 2012, 2013, and 2015.

The figure skating phenom was unhappy with her score for her free skate of “La La Land” [2018 U.S. Figure Skating Championships] that ultimately led to not being selected for the 2018 Winter Olympics. She told NBC Olympics, it’s a “bittersweet experience” as it would be for any competitor. On one side, she’s at the Winter Olympics and is enjoying the events. On the other side, she’s in her prime watching from the sidelines, it’s gotta sting.

Next: Best Olympian from each state

Wagner has already shown she won’t let not being selected deter her or make her sulk by attending tonight. A true champion in every sense of the word, making the best of every moment as it arrives.
