Kansas City Chiefs. 4. player. 124. . AFC. West

One team that desperately needs to figure out what it is doing defensively is the Kansas City Chiefs. While the offensive side of the ball is good enough to carry this team to a third-straight AFC West division crown, it could be the increasingly mediocre Bob Sutton defense that undermines it. Kansas City could totally be in the market for a guy like Johnson.

Truth be told, the Chiefs already have two solid cornerbacks in No. 1 Marcus Peters and the recently acquired Kendall Fuller in the Alex Smith trade with the Washington Redskins. However, Peters has had a tumultuous, albeit productive stint in Kansas City. Fuller showed promise as a young player in Washington, but how will he fare in a bigger role now that he’s with the Chiefs?

We do know that Johnson will be a huge pickup for any secondary that lands him. Having him in a secondary with the likes of Fuller, Peters and safety Eric Berry could go a long way in helping turnaround this Chiefs defense. However, they moved on from defensive tackle Dontari Poe this time last year and could be doing the same with inside linebacker Derrick Johnson.

Kansas City will need to clear some cap space to land a guy that will commanding as big of a contact as Johnson. The Chiefs only have $17,706,467 in available cap space. If Johnson is looking for a deal that prioritizes years over money, then he might be a Chief. At this time, he’s too expensive for the Chiefs’ offseason plans.
