Everything wrong with the initial March Madness rankings
March Madness No. 2 seeds, with all of these squads still in contention for a top seed
No. 2 Seeds:
(2) Purdue – Big 10
(2) Villanova- Big East
(2) Auburn – SEC
(2) Michigan State -Big 10
No doubt Villanova’s experience and the trio of Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, and Donte DiVincenzo will get things back on track to close out the season. Plus, some guy named Jay Wright is their head coach — so yeah, they’ll be just fine. However, they must catch Big East foe Villanova to earn a one-seed.
Michigan State is a team whom the selection committee often under-seeds and undervalues, but not us. Their impressive 25-3 record includes wins over No. 1 seed Purdue and a 9-3 mark versus the RPI top 100. A durable finish will cement them within the two line, and if they knock off the Boilermakers again in the Big 10 tournament, a one seed is not out of the question.
But, could he distraction of the in-house sexual assault allegations be too much a distraction for the Spartans and Tom Izzo? Time will tell, but this will be the toughest test for the veteran head coach to date.
Speaking of Purdue, they are the most dangerous team of our No. 2 seeds, with just one weakness we can think of — rebounding the basketball. If they figure out a way to close that gap on the boards, they may be San Antonio bound.
Auburn has a decent shot at climbing to a one seed, but have some work to do. They will be plenty battle tested come March Madness, with the SEC solid from top to bottom. There is not a single bad team in the entire league, so they will be ready for anything the NCAA tournament bracket throws at them once the field is released.
