While all the talk in Italy is about the two-team battle for the title between Napoli and Juventus, Roma are hoping to grab the spotlight as they continue to muscle their way into the top of the table. While the title seems out of reach after a poor run of form last month and injuries to several key players, a third-place finish would put them into the Champions League next season.

Roma Sporting Director Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo, commonly known by his nickname “Monchi,” said Roma, Inter Milan and eternal city rivals Lazio “have more or less the same chance” of a Champions League spot.

“The important thing is to follow on from what we did at Verona and continue on the right track,” he told Mediaset Premium. “January was not a good month for us, February has to be better because we’ve got important matches in Serie A and the Champions League.”

He added: “I think we are ready for this rush of tough fixtures, because the team is rediscovering its level and this will be a good finale to the season. The problems were more psychological and of performance than they were physical. It’s good that we are recovering players from injury, such as Daniele De Rossi, Patrik Schick and Jonathan Silva, who will be ready soon.”

Standings in their way this Saturday is 10th-place Udinese. While the Giallorossi will be at a disadvantage being on the road, they won’t be able to count on their traveling fans. A group of Roma fans clashed with Hellas Verona supporters prior to their away game earlier this month, resulting in the arrest of 21 people.

In a statement published by the Italian daily Il Corriere dello Sport, the prefect of Udine said: “The Romanista organised fan groups are dangerous and have proven their willingness to be disruptive and violent. In order to guarantee order, security and public safety, the following measures have been adopted: the sale of all tickets to residents in the Lazio region is banned” for the match.

While Roma deals with having no support in the stands, Udinese are without two key players. Striker Kevin Lasagna, who has nine goals and six assists in all competitions this season, is sidelined out with a thigh strain after limping off the field during Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Torino. He is expected to be out until next month. Croatian center-back Igor Bubnjic has been loaned back to his home country to club NK Inter Zapresic until June 30.

Roma defeated Udinese 3-1 when the sides met the first time this season in Rome back in September. Roma will need to duplicate that performance if they hope to distance themselves from Inter Milan and Lazio in the race for third place.
