2018 NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts 7 round mock draft
By Joe Romano
Round 2 – Pick 36
Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
With the edge rusher position squared away, the team can focus on a more splash player. Team owner Jim Irsay has already flirted with the idea of taking Saquon Barkley with the third pick. Here is he goes for one of NFL Draft Twitter’s favorites, Sony Michel of Georgia.
Coming into the season Michel was no where near the name that his teammate Nick Chubb was but the talent was there. The two teamed up for one of the most successful tandems in college history en route to Georgia making the National Championship game. In that game it was Michel, not Chubb, who proved most effective against Alabama’s elite defense filled with future NFL players.
Michel checks almost all the boxes as a running back that coaches will want at the next level. He has shown excellent speed, burst and agility. The play against Alabama where Michel showed patience at the line of scrimmage, burst to turn the corner and excellent balance at the sideline put on display just how special he can be. One of the best things Michel has going is the fact that he split so much work with Chubb. Teams will love that he has had that decreased workload in college.
With Frank Gore aging, the time is now for the Colts to get a game changer to pair with Andrew Luck. Last year’s rookie Marlin Mack is a quality back, but does not have the special traits Michel brings to the table. The bigger question will be does Michel even make it this far in the draft, despite how deep this class is.
