8. Sammy Watkins

The Los Angeles Rams traded with the Buffalo Bills to bring the former Clemson product to Southern California. Watkins has shown flashes of his potential during his time in the league, but has yet to really cement himself as a top receiver. As he enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, the Rams may look to tag him instead of giving him a long-term deal with the hopes of him fully emerging this season.

Watkins compiled 39 catches for 593 yards and added eight touchdowns, not necessarily the stats a number one receiver should be putting up. As a result, the Rams could keep him around for one year to see if he takes another step. The young pairing of Jared Goff and Todd Gurley would benefit considerably if Watkins can take another step in his development.

The numbers for this year are not out yet, but last season’s tag for wide receivers was $15.6 million so it will be north of that. Things are going to be tight with regards to cap space this offseason with the Rams. They have to, and I mean have to, take care of Aaron Donald and reward him with a massive long-term contract. As a result of this pressing need, it seems more and more likely that the Rams will use the tag on one of their players.

Watkins is only 24, barely entering his prime years. If he does take the next step the Rams would have no issue signing him to a multi-year deal in the future.
