2018 NFL Mock Draft: Browns land Baker Mayfield
By Conor Dorney
Heading into the 2017 season, picking the Jacksonville Jaguars to play for an AFC Championship was about as likely picking the Jacksonville Jaguars to play for an AFC title. It happened, however, and now the Jags look to continue that level of success.
A massive rebuild on defense was the focus of the 2017 offseason, but look for the club to re-tool on offense in the 2018 draft, starting with the selection of Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Jackson is one of the more polarizing quarterback prospects in the draft but there’s no questioning his production and electric playmaking ability. After winning the Heisman Trophy in 2016, Jackson was again a finalist in 2017 and continued his development as the Cardinals’ star. It’s easy to see the comparisons to Michael Vick, as Jackson has effortless arm strength and can dazzle with his legs and blazing speed.
Accuracy issues are a concern, particularly on throws to the numbers, but Jackson improved every year as a starting quarterback from an accuracy standpoint, which is really all that you can ask for. He’s much better at reading defenses and manipulating coverages than people give him credit for and combined with his insane playmaking ability, Jackson would be a great Blake Bortles replacement if the Jags are to be considered serious title contenders in the AFC.
