Trading Nick Foles and cutting Torrey Smith would be the quickest way to get back under the cap. Smith carries a $5 million cap figure in 2018 and doesn’t play far enough above replacement level to warrant that kind of cost.

Cutting him leaves no dead money on the Philly cap, and after paying Alshon Jeffery, it’s clear the passing offense will be run through Jeffery and Ertz. As it should be.

This team doesn’t need overpaid veterans at the skill spots. Doug Pederson’s offense creates space for its players and doesn’t require the ancillary pieces to have elite talent, just one or two top skills.

Smith’s is that he’s really fast. Great. There’s always a group of players in the draft or on the cheap in free agency who can run. The Eagles need to find better alternatives, or can simply elevate a talented player like Mack Hollins to a more starring role.
