Washington recently locked up Mason Foster, possibly in anticipation of Brown playing elsewhere in 2018. Foster is basically a league average starter, but is more of a two down player than someone they should want on the field every snap.

What the Redskins really could use here is a highly-athletic playmaker. Brown fits that bill for the most part, but isn’t as consistent as you would like and who is to say how much he will demand on the open market. Will Compton’s contract also is expiring.

The Redskins still have Martrell Spaight and Zach Vigil, both of whom contributed last year. But it could be argued that Spaight and Vigil are more part of the problem last year at this position rather than the solution. Washington’s run defense has been an area of weakness for far too long now and they currently lack the athleticism and coverage ability that every defense needs in today’s NFL on the second level.
