NFL Draft 2018: New York Giants 7-round mock
By Joe Romano
Round 5 – Pick 141
M.J. Stewart, CB, North Carolina
Entering 2017 corner did not look like a need for the New York Giants. Eli Apple looked like a solid corner in his second season. Janoris Jenkins and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie were locking up opposing receivers. That position seemed set.
This past season proved otherwise. The two starters regressed. Apple was benched and his future on the team is in jeopardy thanks to his play and off the field behavior. It still may not be a glaring hole but the Giants would be wise to invest some draft capital on the corner position. The fifth round may be the perfect spot. In this mock draft, the talented corner out of North Carolina, M.J. Stewart fell into their laps.
Stewart may be a day two talent but this is an extremely deep corner class. His lack of elite speed and smaller size could push him to this point. Stewart could be a steal as a nickel corner or even a safety at the next level. His excellent ball skills and physical nature would make that transition smooth. A team like the Giants, with two starting outside corners, would be a good landing spot.
Round 6 – Pick 179
Colby Gossett, G, Appalachian State
Another upgrade to the offensive line. Again, they could need to replace 80% of their starters this offseason. Colby Gossett could be a value pick in the sixth round for this team. A reliable starter at Applachain State, he has NFL ready size that can be valuable in a reserve role.
He is not an elite athlete and it shows on tape. His technique is solid but not excellent at this point. The good news is that he was able to hold up against Appalachian State’s toughest opponents in Miami and Tennessee. New York could take him, let him develop and see what they have in year two or three as the team works on his technique.
