NHL Trade Deadline: 5 deals the New York Rangers should make
3. Trade David Desharnais to Winnipeg
David Desharnais may not be the most attractive name on the rental market this year, but he certainly has value to the right team as one of the few affordable centers left on the market.
In 58 games this season, Desharnais has six goals and 20 assists for 26 points in 58 games, not bad at all for an expected depth center signing. Desharnais was in a similar position last year at the trade deadline, when he was traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Edmonton Oilers. He went on to score the Game 5 overtime winner in the first round against the San Jose Sharks to give the Oilers a 3-2 series lead, eventually leading to a 4-2 series win.
Most teams that needed a center found what their answer already. Winnipeg is one of the few teams with a question down the middle in the bottom six. The top six of Mark Scheifele and Bryan Little is one of the best center cores in the NHL but after them, it weakens out with Andrew Copp and Matt Hendricks who have combined for 29 points in total. Copp has looked better as of late, but Hendricks at 36 years old should be a concern going into the playoffs and adding a depth center that can play on third or fourth line greatly increases their offensive flexibility for a deep playoff run.
The Pittsburgh Penguins were front-runners for Desharnais, but after acquiring Derrick Brassard, they no longer have a need for centers, nor should any team give them any more help at this point.
