Round 3 – Pick 81

Trenton Thompson, DT, Georgia

A position of need that is constantly being mocked to the Cowboys in the first round is the defensive tackle position. At 19 there are names like Vita Vea, Maurice Hurst and Taven Bryan all being talked about. With Maliek Collins looking solid, it would be wise of Dallas to grab a massive space eater than can play next to Collins at the 1-technique. Vea fits that bill while the other two are more similar to Collins. If the team parts with restricted free agent David Irving this offseason, the position becomes even more of a need.

Right now, with Irving and Collins, the defensive tackle position should not be as big of a priority as some are making it out to be. Spending a third round pick seems more palatable on that position. In this mock the best defensive tackle available at pick 81 was Georgia’s Trentron Thompson.

Thompson is another player that is similar to Collins, which would mean keeping Collins at the 1-technique with Thompson at the three. Collins and Thompson have similar size and build. The two could combine to be an athletic duo in the center of Dallas’ defense. Medical concerns will likely push him down the board. If he checks out medically, he is a good value late in day two. While at Georgia he was a wrecking ball in the middle with a non-stop motor. He also showed excellent ability to close gaps and shed blockers in the run game. Thompson would make a great addition to the middle of Dallas’ defense.
