Dolphins reportedly looking to trade Jarvis Landry

The Miami Dolphins tagged Jarvis Landry last week, and now there are reports the team is looking to trade him before the new league year.

Jarvis Landry currently has a home, but it might be a fluid situation. After the Dolphins tagged Landry on Tuesday, many believed the team would retain him for at least one year while attempting to sign him long term.

Instead, it appears Landry could still be on the move. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Miami executives will have talks with Landry’s representatives, but with an eye on moving the 25-year-old. The Dolphins still have contractual control of Landry until March 14 at 4 p.m. ET, when the new league year kicks in. After that, the Dolphins can’t trade Landry unless he signs the franchise tag of $16.2 million.

Landry should have suitors, but it will be difficult to trade him for any legitimate compensation. Teams are aware that Miami is already over the projected salary cap by $7.4 million, forcing it to make some cuts. While it would be possible for the Dolphins to keep Landry by cutting veterans such as Ja’Wuan James and Julius Thomas, they wouldn’t be able to address other concerns across the roster.

If the Dolphins can’t find a team willing to both give up assets in a trade and sign Landry, they could rescind the tag (think the Carolina Panthers and Josh Norman) and clear the cap hit, all while making Landry a free agent. Miami already has Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker in house, and while Landry led the league in receptions last year, he didn’t crack 1,000 receiving yards.

For his career, Landry has amassed 4,038 yards and 22 touchdowns over his four-year career. The best campaign was 2015, when the former LSU star caught 110 passes for 1,157 yards.
