Detroit Red Wings: C+

Coming into the NHL trade deadline, the Red Wings were thought to be one of the big sellers. The Red Wings are in the middle of rebuilding and turning their old core over into a new group of players. Ken Holland, the longtime general manager, had a lot of pieces to play with at the deadline. Petr Mrazek was dealt with the Flyers, and Tomas Tatar was sent to the Golden Knights. Holland would have liked to trade more, but the market wasn’t there.

Mike Green was supposed to be one of the best available rental defensemen, but due to a recent injury, Holland couldn’t trade him. He was able to receive excellent value for both pieces he did move. Mrazek was traded to Philadelphia for a 2018 conditional fourth-round pick and a 2019 conditional third-round pick. Tomas Tatar was moved to Vegas in return for three draft picks. A 2018 first-round pick, a 2019 second-round pick and a 2021 third-round pick. As Detroit begins to rebuild, it will need all the draft capital it can get. Adding five draft picks in two trades is good business for Holland.

The amount of assets Detroit added was impressive. If Detroit would have been able to clear out even more contracts or get more assets from its upcoming free agents, it would have been among the winners of the deadline. Due to that fact, Detroit was able to deal some assets, but not the main pieces it received a C+.
