Report card grades for all 31 NHL teams at the trade deadline
Philadelphia Flyers: B
Ron Hextall and the Flyers did not really have a choice in February when it came to trades they needed to make. Both Brian Elliot and Michal Neuvirth went down with injuries, and the Flyers are in first place in the Metropolitan. Philadelphia was able to work out a deal with the Detroit Red Wings to acquire Petr Mrazek. The Flyers had no other glaring needs. They could have added depth on defense or secondary scoring, but they have enough young players that are making an impact.
The Goaltending came at a favorable price for Hextall. He only needed to give up a conditional 2018 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2019 third-round pick to make the deal. Detroit needed to move one of its goalies this year. Jimmy Howard has a long-term contract, while Mrazek is a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Mrazek has filled in and played well for the Flyers. In three games, he has three wins and only allowed four goals against.
Once all three goalies are healthy, coach Dave Hakstol will have a tough decision to make on which ones to play. If Mrazek continues to play well, it will be tough to sit him. However, both Elliot and Neuvirth have played well for Philadelphia. An even tougher decision will come at the end of the year, when the Flyers must decide if they want to keep Mrazek or let him walk as a free agent. Hextall and Hakstol both will be put in a tough situation and teams in need of a goaltender will want to monitor it closely. Because the Flyers were able to address their needs at an affordable price, they receive a B.
