Calgary Flames: C+

The Calgary Flames made one trade at the deadline, acquiring Nick Shore from Ottawa for a seventh-round draft pick. Other than that trade, Calgary was quiet. The Flames did add Chris Stewart off waivers, so he will add even more depth at no cost. Nick Shore was moved from the Los Angeles Kings as part of the Dion Phaneuf trade. As the deadline approached, many thought the Flames would be involved in trading for a goalie with Mike Smith on injured reserve. Brad Treliving has built a solid team filled with talented young forwards and good veterans on the blue line.

Adding Nick Shore via trade was a nice addition that will help the Flames solidify their center positions. Picking up Chris Stewart on waivers is also a nice move for Treliving. Stewart brings a physical presence to the game and has a track record of being a good person in the locker room. Stewart was just as important of an addition as Shore.

Brad Treliving didn’t need to do much to make this Calgary Flames team competitive because it was already good. Where he did well was to not get tempted by some of the big names on the market and overspend where it was unnecessary. Names like Evander Kane were tied to Calgary for the days leading up to the deadline. Calgary, instead of overpaying, trusted its team and added small pieces when it saw fit. Treliving and the Calgary Flames scored a C in this year’s trade deadline.
